Sites like ModelMayhem.com may sound like a porn site to some, but it is a career goldmine to young start-up photographers, artists, models and anyone else involved in the fashion industry. Amongst the droves of fetish “models” and “artistic” nude photographers exists a small circle of incredibly talented individuals thriving in this online network.

Jen Senn is one of these photographers. She spends her nights posting casting calls looking for models, make up artists, and stylists. Dozens often respond and she goes through the humorous process of separating the gold from the dirt. With each new shoot she hoped to graduate from Model Mayhem and move on to agency models. After months of agency rejection letters, an agent finally confirms and a shoot is set up for the next day. I was fortunate enough to come along for the shoot at the majestic Belvedere Castle in central park.

Thursday night very well may hold the best free event in New York… Chelsea gallery openings. Every week some of the most posh New Yorkers gather about the old warehouse district to strut up and down the West side, going from one gallery opening to the next. Complimentary drinks are given out to lube up conversation, wallets, and critical opinions and to give young scenesters a reason to attend. Last Thursday I went to the galleries with a mission to find my favorite exhibition and interview the gallery director. Brian Clamp, of ClampArt, graciously agreed and we set up an appointment a few days later…

What a day! First Jen and I woke up at the crisp hour of 10:45. An record early of the week! Then off to do a photo shoot of the wonderful DJ Tcup. Next on the agenda was interviewing the Gallery Owner of Clamp Art for My blog with Uptempo Magazine. On our way back to Brooklyn we spotted baker at Le Graine Cafe and stopped in for tea and crepes. Then we had a mini house warming party and dinner with our new Park Slope Friends! Upon returning home we edited a bunch of pictures and applied to a production company and kicked off our relationship with the neighborhood hat shop in an epic quest for free hats!

Tom and Julia came to us all the way from Europe, they had been dating for several months. Tom is from England and Julia hails from the fine country of Hungry. We liked them right off. So much so I decided to paint both of them. At that point in the series I was a bit overly concerned with accessories and Tom and I pondered options for awhile. The Idea of holding a mini globe came up, in hindsight a pretty cool idea, but at that point I was pretty strict with my no hands rule. Then a few other lame ideas were rejected until we finally ended on paint streaks across his face. He looked like a cross between a football player and an indian. Neither were working for his blond clean cut look. Julia on the other hand through her hair up in a spiky offbeat bun and we had instant success. She had this haunting mesmerizing stare. To top off a great night we headed to the roof, where we dared all of our clothes off and ran around with only our flash to light us.

Laurence came to stay with us, and I thought he would be the perfect opportunity, being a photographer and all, to break my streak of all female paintings. He was in New York self publishing a small beautiful photo book based upon his blog “if you leave”. We made a deal that he would sit for a painting if I would sit for a portrait. A lot of art being made in this basement of mine. The two conversations that stands out in my mind with Laurence are the Belgium citizens are up for the record for longest time with out a government and this friend of his who was famous for being famous.

Jen and I met Vanessa at our very first New York party. We heard about it through a craigslist event, like so many of our early NYC adventures. The Event called for a live painter and I rushed to opportunity. After an arduous twenty minute walk, two subway transfers and another last push through eight foot snow pile lined streets we arrived at the Bushwick party. Vanessa stood out right away with her giant playful afro and rambunctious attitude. I asked her If she had any interest in shooting with us. Jen inquired about her wardrobe. Vanessa disregarded the wardrobe idea and suggested a nude body painting frenzy. It was at this moment that I realized New York is the right place for me.
